Open-Heart Surgery

Your heart is in good hands. Since 1981, we’ve performed over 82,000 open-heart surgeries, more than any other facility in Florida. Our experience and multidisciplinary training allow us to give you more efficient and more effective cardiovascular care.

Open-heart surgery

Open-heart is a general term for surgical procedures that involve opening up the chest and stopping the heart to repair or replace tissue, muscles, valves, or the aorta.

How open-heart surgery works

During open-heart surgery, surgeons will cut through the breastbone to expose the heart. To keep the body pumping with blood and oxygen while they operate, the blood vessels are connected to a heart-lung bypass machine.

Our highly skilled surgeons perform a variety of cardiac surgical interventions including:

  • Aorta repair/replacement
  • Aortic valve surgery
  • Atrial septal defect repair
  • Congenital heart defect surgery
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or heart bypass surgery
  • Heart transplant
  • Hypoplastic left heart repair surgery
  • Mitral valve surgery
  • Tetralogy of Fallot repair surgery
  • Transposition of great vessels repair
  • Tricuspid atresia repair
  • Tricuspid valve surgery
  • Truncus arteriosus repair
  • Ventricular septal defect repair

Your cardiovascular team will identify your specific condition and determine the best treatment plan for you.

Off-Pump Surgery

Recent advances in technology now make it possible for us to operate on a beating heart without the use of a bypass machine. These advancements can be seen in the most common open-heart procedure, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Although still a complex procedure, off-pump surgery reduces risk for patients. Our success rates for these procedures surpass the expectations set by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Are you a good candidate for off-pump procedures?

Your cardiovascular team will diagnose you and provide a comprehensive plan of treatment designed for your condition.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

We’re constantly exploring new technologies that allow for less invasive approaches to heart surgery. Many of our minimally invasive procedures don’t require us to open the chest at all and only require a tiny incision, resulting in less scarring and a faster recovery.

Our latest minimally invasive technology includes:

Are you a good candidate for a minimally invasive surgery?

These procedures are typically reserved for patients who are at a higher risk for traditional open-heart surgeries. However, we are currently participating in a clinical trial to see if this technology is beneficial for lower-risk heart patients as well. Your doctor will consider your diagnosis and decide on the best course of treatment for you.
